Adam Wainwright will face off against the Nationals and Max Scherzer in his second start of Spring Training this afternoon.
Wainwright had a mediocre outing in his first Spring Training start pitching two innings, while allowing two hits and three walks. Although he didn’t allow any runs, Wainwright lacked command on the mound.
He will face a hard-hitting Nationals lineup this afternoon, a good test for the veteran right-hander.
Manager Mike Matheny spoke to the media earlier this week about the team’s injuries and what opportunities might become available for his younger players.
Matt Carpenter is still nursing a back injury, but is going through a “swing progression” as Matheny described. There is no timetable for Carpenter’s return. Jose Martinez is also recovering from a hamstring injury suffered late last week. Matheny said this could open up opportunities for both Patrick Wisdom and Andrew Kizner.
Bud Norris threw a live batting practice after tweaking his hamstring in a game last week and Matheny does not believe the injury to be serious.
